Rick Hudson - Drums

Born in Middlesbrough Rick began playing drums, piano and trumpet aged 11. He also reached a high standard on the French Horn but by the age of 18 he was focussing on the drums because he found he could pull more girls playing drums. Strange - I would have thought the women would have been drawn to a man with a "big horn" (ha ha). Quite what attracted them to a sweaty teenager thrashing round like a mad monkey on speed I don’t know.

In the middle of 1995 he joined forces with guitarist Chris Watson, forming a hard bop jazz group called 'The Outsiders' that toured the country and played at festivals, including, the Malta Jazz Festival in 1996. During this period he also did some live work with bassist Colin Hodgkinson, and was house drummer at The Troubadour, Earls Court , London , performing with Jim Mullen, Roger Beaujolais, Pete Wareham, Alan Barnes and many others.

At the beginning of 1999 he formed his own jazz funk group called 'Rick Hudson and the Boogaloo Band', and started receiving lessons from jazz drummer Tommy Chase. In 2001 the band was signed to Blow it Hard Records and released a single 'Chicken'. The band toured the country, the highlights being The Jazz Cafe, Ronnie Scotts, and The 100 Club, London , and support gigs for JTQ. The band then released an album featuring alto sax legend Richie Cole and then went on to record a second album featuring Hal Ritson on keys, Rob Harris on guitar and Tiffany Gore, vocals. The band continued to tour until their break-up in 2004 when Loose Juice was formed from core members of the Boogaloo Band.

As well as Loose juice commitments, drinking, excercising his hand muscles (I haven't asked how!), impregnating his partner and as a result spending many sleepless nights feeding the baby and changing nappies whilst mindlessly watching "Make Your Play" on TV (unless there's any porn on Bravo!), Rick is working with touring American blues acts such as Robert Penn, Frank Ace and others as well playing for jazz guitarist great Jem Watson.

Phil Stevenson - Guitar

One day as a child Phil picked up his brother’s guitar and has been poor ever since.

He began playing guitar and writing music in band called Camel Squad during school, and supported Colonel Hathi’s Dawn Patrol on their gigs around Cambridge. During rehearsal breaks while everyone else went out to discover cigarettes, Phil took his chance to practice playing drums and bass, and there began lifelong fascination with making music.

He eventually tried cigarettes on his 16th birthday, about 25 in one hour, which didn’t make him look any cooler whatsoever, even with the bathroom door in the way.

After graduating in Canterbury, Phil had a brief career as a postman but moved to London to meet musicians in Funk and Jazz music. Along the way he formed soul band ‘Cypher’ with singer Martyne Callender, composed soundtracks to 2 short films, joined several Brasilian bands, studying the percussion instruments of the Carnival bateria, as well as cavaquinho (four stringed guitar), and learning to sing Samba. This has profoundly influenced his approach to music.

Phil enjoys moving between different rhythmic and melodic styles and has performed with Heidi Vogel, Jim Hart, Nick Ramm, and Tom Arthurs.

Tiago Coimbra - Bass

Born in Brasilia in 1980, Tiago Coimbra grew up in Brazil, Washington D.C., Guatemala and Cambridge UK. He started playing guitar and drums through the influence of his brother and settled on the bass as his instrument at the age of twelve. Since then is estimated that he has spent around 75% of his life with a bass in his hands and is known to snuggle up to his bass every night in bed.

Tiago's first gig was at the age of 13 with Beware the Moon, a rock band he played with for the next four years. With Beware the Moon, he played gigs, festivals and studio sessions. In 1997 he joined a jazz fusion band, The Justin Quinn Trio. The gigs and studio sessions with this bands laid a foundation for his studies at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford, England.

At ACM Tiago studied with Stephan Redtenbacher, a Berklee graduate, played in several bands, recorded and set up a Jamiroquai tribute band, Scamiroquai. After graduating from ACM Tiago won a scholarship to Berklee College of Music, Boston, starting his studiesthere in September 1999.

Whilst in college, Tiago was involved in a broad range of projects, including performing and recording with his own band Spontaneous, and Hiromi Uehara's Explosion Trio. He has also taken masterclasses with Matthew Garrison , Abraham Laboriel, George Duke, Branford Marsalis and many others.

Tiago has since performed all over the world, highlights include the Manila Jazz festival and performing with Arthur Maia in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
